On December 21, Congress passed H.R. 133, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021. The President signed the bill into law on December 27. The bill allocates $42.934 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which constitutes a $1.250 billion increase over FY2020. Specifically, it allocates $835.71 million for the National Eye Institute (NEI), a founding member of the scEYEnce campaign. This is an $11.624 million increase over FY2020. While the 3% increase in NIH funding outpaces the Biomedical Research Development Price Index (BRDPI) of 2.4% for FY2021, the 1.4% increase in NEI funding does not.
